Have you ever thought, or heard someone else say, that they are too inflexible to try yoga? This is the attitude of many: that yoga is not for them because they are too old, too stiff, too busy, maybe even too tired or too lazy. It’s too difficult, they contend, likely with thoughts of a slender, flexible and strong yogi or yogini posed in some gravity defying arm balance or with a leg or two twisted around one appendage or the other.
Yes, this IS yoga. But it is not ALL yoga. It does not need to be YOUR yoga in order for you to have yoga in your life!
If you are sitting as you are reading this, think about rooting your feet evenly into the ground. You might drop your shoulders and gently place your arms along the outsides of your legs. You could choose to actively extend your arms and place one hand on each knee. You might even decide to extend your arms upward, tuck your pelvis under and lengthen through your entire spine. Center your mind, take a deep breath through your nose and exhale fully… welcome to yoga.
Yoga is YOU! It’s where you are, however you are! There are no qualifications you must obtain in order to be a yogi. If you can breathe, you CAN do yoga!
Are you in line at a store or doing the dishes? Are you reading this on your cell phone as you stand on the bus? Breathe in, lean forward and shift your weight to your toes. Exhale and bring your weight to your heels. Inhale and find your center. Ta-Da! You’re doing it… Tadasana, or Mountain Pose, that is.
Unite your body with your breath in any shape your body can make. This is yoga. Be mindful of your thoughts. Be forgiving of yourself and others. Honor your intentions.
